Transition Time: CSI Willamette Valley Chapter Certification Classes

 

After considerable handwringing and stoking of my guilt complex, I have decided to relinquish my role as chair of the Construction Specifications Institute/Willamette Valley Chapter’s Certification Committee, a position I’ve held for the past decade. Unfortunately, because I haven’t been able to find someone to take up the mantle, the chapter will not offer its annual preparatory classes this coming winter for the Institute’s Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) and Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA) certification examinations.
 
The Willamette Valley Chapter certification classes not only prepared students for the CSI-sponsored certification examinations but also served as a foundational training resource for those seeking to enhance their understanding of construction documents and construction contract administration. The classes proved especially beneficial to emerging professionals from all segments of the AEC industry. Many graduates went on to successfully achieve CSI certification.  
 
I’m not sure of the exact number of people who participated in one or both courses but after a run of 41 consecutive years the total must be in the hundreds if not thousands. Suspending the classes will impact anyone who looked forward to taking and hoped to likewise benefit from either set of classes in the near future. I apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. In their absence, I can highly recommend the Portland CSI CDT study course, which is offered via virtual (Zoom) sessions. The inimitable Cherise Lakeside, FCSI, CDT, is the instructor. Cherise is a senior specifications writer for RDH Building Science, past president of the Portland chapter, former Director-at-Large on the Institute board, and a CSI fellow.
 
I am grateful to all of you who have supported and took part in the Willamette Valley Chapter certification classes over the years. I’m especially indebted to my fellow instructors—most recently Linn West, Larry Banks, Jim Chaney, Brian Hamilton, and Jerry Boucock. Your dedication to advancing the AEC industry is truly commendable, and I have been honored to be a part of this journey with you. I am proud that we provided so many with an invaluable conceptual framework they can rely upon for the remainder of their careers, in a convenient format at a price that was hard to beat.
 
I am hopeful the discontinuation of the annual CSI-Willamette Valley Chapter certification classes will only be temporary. In the meantime, please continue to engage with the WVC, attend chapter events, and make the most of the invaluable networking opportunities offered by the organization.

AI and its Impact on the Design and Construction Industries

If someone mentions free pizza is part of the deal, I tend to be a sucker and say “yes” to any request. Naturally then, I did exactly that when Kayla Bundy and Sydney Mills (CSI Willamette Valley Chapter president and president-elect, respectively) asked me to lead a discussion on the topic of artificial intelligence (AI) and its impact on the design and construction industries during last Thursday afternoon’s “Learning and Libations” CSI meeting at Roaring Rapids Pizza Co. 

I am by no means expert on the subject. On the other hand, I am fascinated by recent developments in AI. Indeed, I’ve written several blog posts about AI and its implications for the architectural profession in recent years. Speculation about the future is fun because it encourages me to explore the unknown, question my assumptions, and envision possibilities. 

There’s a lot of hype these days about artificial intelligence and how it is poised to radically transform our lives. This excitement is largely fueled by the emergence of natural language processing chatbots including ChatGPT and Bard, as well as text-to-image generators like MidJourney and Dall-E. While these applications showcase remarkable capabilities, I believe it’s important to temper our expectations and avoid the fear of machines overpowering and eradicating us pesky humans. Let’s be realistic.

The way AI is being practically applied today is still largely narrow and siloed. For example, a so-called “AI” application may assist in analyzing building envelope performance but fails to consider the full spectrum of design considerations. Similarly, another app might generate alternative apartment layouts based on programmed parameters but falls short in simultaneously optimizing window size and placement. In essence, today’s narrow AI applications offer specific functionalities rather than general intelligence.

Numerous startups have recently developed (narrow) AI tools intended to capitalize on the current AI buzz and become the next “killer app” for architects. The following is just a small sampling (I snagged the tagline that accompanies each from their respective websites):

  • ARCHITEChTURES: Design better buildings faster with AI.
  • ARK: The first AI platform for creating architectural schematic design.
  • BricsCAD BIM: Where AI and BIM converge for a seamless, efficient architectural design process.
  • Finch: The generative copilot for better buildings.
  • Maket: Simplifying zoning compliance.
  • SWAPP: Design to inspire.

I figure we’re still some years away before general AI becomes a reality and truly useful in comprehensive design and construction applications. Once we reach that milestone, AI will be capable of providing truly time-saving digital assistance to humans. The most valued human skillset will likely revolve around the ability to analyze AI outputs critically and effectively craft prompts to iteratively improve results. This underscores the enduring importance of critical thinking and the capacity to grasp the bigger picture. 

I do imagine AI’s ability to understand text and spoken words in much the same way human beings do will eventually transform the nature of architectural practice, relieving us of what today are often tedious and time-consuming processes. With increasing sophistication, AI apps will be able to tackle especially challenging tasks, such as helping architects with remodel/addition projects. Robots may become affordable and widespread enough to tirelessly handle field-verification tasks, utilizing LIDAR to digitize vast point clouds and autonomously distinguishing structural framing from ducts, pipes, or conduits.
 
The problem with the coming AI revolution may be the elimination of many current jobs in the design and construction fields. Why hire entry-level staff if a digital assistant is faster, more reliable, and comes out-of-the-box with a massive, comprehensive, and up-to-the-minute knowledge base? This raises the crucial question of where experienced, critical thinking humans will come from if there are no longer entry-level roles to foster their development. Everyone needs a starting point.
 
Speculating about the impact of AI on the design and construction industries allows us to better understand the transformative possibilities while considering the importance of human skills. While I began by saying we need to temper expectations, the fact is the pace of AI improvements is rapidly accelerating. As I said previously, AI promises to make the future work of architects better and easier so we can focus on what fundamentally distinguishes real architecture from mere building. We need to embrace its possibilities and proactively anticipate its disruptive potential.

Self-Healing Technology for High-Performance Coatings

 
Gerald Wilson, Ph.D president and CEO of Autonomic Materials explains the concepts underlying the technology of self-healing high-performance coatings.

The Willamette Valley Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute continues to produce well-attended “Lunch & Learn” continuing education opportunities. The latest edition featured a fascinating presentation on self-healing technology for coatings by Gerald Wilson, Ph.D, president and CEO of Autonomic Materials, Inc.. Self-healing materials are a class of smart materials that have the capability to repair themselves after damage.
 
Corrosion is a costly and ubiquitous problem. According to Gerald, the global cost of corrosion damage exceeds $2 trillion per year. Typical protective materials suffer a performance deficit after damage. Exposed substrates corrode, which leads to shorter lifecycles of metal assets, costly maintenance, downtime, and in the worst cases catastrophic failure. Moreover, the highest performing of the conventional protective coatings tend to be bad for the environment, generating 2 million tons of volatile organic compounds and 15 million tons of CO2 equivalents per year in the U.S. alone. The new self-healing technologies eliminate the tradeoff between high performance and low-VOC properties.
 
In a nutshell, the concept of self-healing coatings draws inspiration from biological systems and mimics their ability to regenerate and heal. The concept is based on the ability of smart, self-healing compounds to react to physical damage by dynamically triggering the recovery of protective or aesthetic properties. Self-healing coatings are not reliant upon human intervention to activate their protection.
 
In a biological system, injury (damage) to organic tissues sets in motion a cascade of biochemical events to repair the damage. Platelets (thrombocytes) delivered through the vascular system aggregate at the injury site to form a fibrin clot. Self-healing coating technologies of the type pioneered by Autonomic Materials emulate this process. They maintain corrosion-resistance of metal assets through the delivery of microencapsulated liquid healing agents (dicyclopentadiene plus neat or wax-protected Grubb’s catalyst) carried in an epoxy resin matrix.
 
The tiny microcapsules (10 microns or less in diameter) rupture when damage occurs (such as caused by a scratch, abrasion, or weathering), releasing the healing agents to the damage site. The healing agents, which may be liquid or solid form, flow into the affected areas. They fill the voids and restore the coating’s integrity by polymerizing and healing the damage. This action occurs autonomously, without the need for external intervention. Self-healing coatings can repair multiple cycles of damage throughout their lifespan, enhancing their durability and providing sustained protection.
 
When the damage to the coated substrate is too large for the self-healing agent to completely repair, the agent will still reseal the edges of the damaged zone, preventing loss of adhesion and subsequent delamination of the coating. As a result, the coating will remain on the substrate for longer and the scope of damage needing a repair during a maintenance event will be smaller.
 

Autonomic Materials is at the forefront of the development of self-healing technology for high-performance coatings. Its potential application for the protection of metal assets is very broad. Among the markets the company is targeting for use of its products are the oil & gas, transportation, military, industrial, and infrastructure sectors. Of course, self-healing technology for high-performance coatings shows great potential for building construction applications. By incorporating self-healing coatings into construction materials, it is possible to enhance their durability, extend their service life, and reduce maintenance and repair costs.
 
Two obvious applications for the technology in building construction include the protection of concrete structures and in metal coatings.
  • Corrosion of steel reinforcement can lead to structural damage and reduce a building’s lifespan. Self-healing coatings on the reinforcing steel can be formulated with corrosion inhibitors and encapsulated healing agents to neutralize the corrosive environment and prevent serious damage.
  • Self-healing coatings (primarily employed in the form of primers) can provide improved resistance to UV radiation, moisture, chemicals, and physical abrasion on metal substrates used on various building surfaces, among them wall claddings, roofing, metal railings, and more.  
The implications of the widespread application of self-healing coatings are clear. Enhanced durability, and reduced maintenance and repair costs are key attributes of interest to building owners, but perhaps more importantly, self-healing coatings minimize material waste and environmental impact. With extended service life and reduced maintenance requirements, the demand for new construction materials decreases, resulting in resource conservation.

My immediate reaction as Gerald described self-healing technology is that science fiction is becoming fact. Perhaps it’s a product of my overactive imagination, but the remarkable properties of the self-healing chemistry brought to mind the T-1000, the shape shifting, menacing antagonist from the iconic movie Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Just as the T-1000 could reform itself after being shot, slashed, or torn apart, self-healing materials demonstrate an analogous level of resilience and adaptability. Their autonomous healing process mirrors the T-1000’s ability to autonomously regenerate and resume its mission.
 
Self-healing technology is a rapidly evolving field, with ongoing research and development efforts optimizing its effectiveness and rapidly expanding its range of applications. As companies like Autonomic Materials further develop new materials and methods, we can expect self-healing coatings to increasingly be relied upon to improve the durability, performance, and sustainability of construction materials.

Building for the Pacific Northwest

Me, along with fellow CSI Willamette Valley Chapter members Kayla Bundy (2022-2023 chapter president) and Sydney Mills (2023-2024 chapter president) at the 2023 CSI Northwest Region Conference in Bellingham.

I attended the 2023 Construction Specifications Institute Northwest Region Conference in Bellingham, Washington May 4 through May 6. The Mt. Rainier Chapter of the Construction Specifications Institute served as the most gracious host for the conference, which took place at the Hotel Bellwether, idyllically situated overlooking Bellingham Bay. Under the banner of “Building for the Pacific Northwest,” the conference renewed my faith in CSI’s mission and enthusiasm for the future of design and construction. 
 
It had been far too long since I last went to a CSI Northwest Region conference. Of course, COVID-19 threw a wrench in the works for large gatherings (notably resulting in the cancellation of the 2020 CSI Northwest & West Bi-Region Conference that the Willamette Valley Chapter was organizing). So, it was a treat to reconnect with CSI friends from around the NW Region I had not seen in years. The conference was well-attended and chock full of informative, interesting continuing education seminars. The prevailing sentiment was that it had been much too long since everyone had seen each other in person.
 
To merely say I am glad I attended is a big understatement. I was tremendously impressed with the high quality of the educational sessions, the insights of our keynote speakers, and the infectious energy and kind hospitality of the Mt. Rainier Chapter organizers. Most of all, I was thrilled to spend time with fellow members who share my enthusiasm for the Construction Specifications Institute and what it offers to every design and construction professional.
 
Speaking of the educational sessions, I attended the following seminars (there were many more), each of which were an hour in duration and uniformly excellent:

I returned home convinced more than ever that CSI is the AEC organization best suited to lead the industry as it confronts a transformative and challenging tomorrow. Why? I’ve said it before: It’s because CSI is radically inclusive, welcoming members from all corners of the industry. It’s because it remains the most influential voice across the entire spectrum of construction communications. It’s because construction knowledge is only becoming more complex and necessary to master. It’s most definitely because of the people who comprise its membership. If you were there, you know
the 2023 Construction Specifications Institute Northwest Region Conference was the place to renew your faith in CSI’s mission and enthusiasm for the future of design and construction. 
 
Like many other professional membership organizations, CSI has seen its ranks decline precipitously in recent years. The reasons why this is occurring are not entirely clear to me. CSI has so much to offer everyone involved in all facets of design and construction. Hunkering down into discrete silos is anathema to CSI; the members of our organization are preternaturally disposed toward networking, breaking barriers, and crossing lines. If you charted the AEC industry as a Venn diagram, CSI would be located precisely where the intersection of all the sets occurs. Better than any other association, CSI fosters engagement and interaction between the disparate constituents of the building industry.
 
The conference bolstered my belief that CSI members are hands down the friendliest, most generous, and brightest agents of change when it comes to the goal of improving construction communication. The conference also underscored my certainty in the value of building relationships. The personal connections we establish are the most potent tools we can leverage in our professional lives. The key is connecting with those who share the common goals, determination, and chutzpah to make things happen. This spirit is best exemplified by the incredibly special people I have come to know as a member of the Construction Specifications Institute.

2023 CSI Certification Classes


For the 41st consecutive year, the Construction Specifications Institute–Willamette Valley Chapter (CSI-WVC) is pleased to offer a series of classes on Construction Contract Documents in addition to another set covering Construction Contract Administration. While the principal purpose of the courses is to assist those planning to take one or more of the CSI-sponsored certification examinations, they’re also beneficial to anyone in the AEC industry seeking foundational training in the preparation and use of construction documents. Additionally, the classes can be of significant value to architectural interns and to the firms for whom they work, as well as very helpful to those preparing to take the State Architectural Licensing Exams.  

The evening classes begin in January 2023 and continue weekly through the first half of March.

Due to the continued risks associated the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chapter will conduct the 2023 certification classes virtually rather than in person. The organizers are confident the quality of instruction will be as close to the real classroom experience as possible; regardless, the Willamette Valley Chapter’s board of directors approved a 50% reduction of the standard registration fees in acknowledgement of the limitations of online teaching.

Both certification courses can help students develop a conceptual understanding of the entire construction process, and concrete skills in:
  • Construction document development and administration
  • Specification writing and enforcement
  • Product research and sourcing
  • Communication with the design and contracting teams
The Construction Documents program provides a comprehensive overview for anyone who writes, interprets, enforces, or manages construction documents. Being able to understand and interpret written construction documents helps architects, contractors, contract administrators, material suppliers, and manufacturers' representatives perform their jobs more effectively. Understanding the roles and relationships of all participants improves communication among all members of the construction team. The Construction Contract Administration course goes further to emphasize the specific knowledge and skills necessary to administer and enforce construction contract documentation. While not necessary, some students may find it helpful to have completed the Construction Documents course before taking the Construction Contract Administration program. 

As mentioned above, both classes serve as excellent means to prepare for CSI’s certification exams. Certification as a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) means you have demonstrated ability to prepare, use, and interpret construction documents. CDT certification is a prerequisite to CSI’s advanced certifications, which include Certified Construction Specifier (CCS), Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA), and Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR). 
 
CSI offers its certification examinations twice annually, in the spring and the fall. Taking the 2023 Willamette Valley Chapters classes this winter would set you up nicely to register for the spring set of exams. 
 
The classes are especially beneficial for emerging design & construction industry professionals, and to the firms for which they work. They’re also particularly helpful to aspiring architects preparing to take a State Licensing Exam. 
 
The Willamette Valley Chapter is working with the American Institute of Architects to renew the eligibility of the courses for AIA continuing education credit. Once approved, fully fledged architects will be ablet to earn up to 16 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours to apply toward maintaining Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners professional licensure; AIA Members will earn up to 16 Continuing Education Learning Units (LU) which CSI will report directly to AIA/CES.
 

Hundreds of local AEC professionals have already benefitted immeasurably by taking one or both CSI certification classes. Do the same and you’ll learn about the importance of clear, concise, correct, and complete construction documents, and more fully understand how projects unfold from conception to delivery. Best of all, you’ll advance your career prospects and become a highly valued member of any project team.

Early-Bird Rates for the 2021 CSI Certification Classes end this Thursday!

The 2021 editions of the Construction Specifications Institute-Willamette Valley Chapter certification classes are rapidly approaching. As I described previously, while the principal purpose of the courses is to assist those planning to take one or more of the CSI-sponsored certification examinations, they’re also beneficial to anyone in the AEC industry seeking foundational training in the preparation and use of construction documents.

As the saying goes, knowledge is power. Knowledge provides a competitive edge. Architecture and construction are increasingly dependent upon the effective conveyance of design intent. They are likewise dependent upon the clear definition of project responsibilities and roles detailed by the forms of agreement most widely used in construction projects. It’s important and necessary for everyone—owners, architects, engineers, specifiers, general contractors, subcontractors, construction materials suppliers, and others—to understand project delivery options, standard forms of agreement, means for organizing drawings and specifications, etc. 

Knowledgeable employers highly value those who understand the language of construction, its underlying principles and terminology, and the critical relationships between all the participants in any design and construction undertaking. Employees who thoroughly understand this language not only survive but are more likely to thrive. They are the winners in today’s challenging and constantly changing environment. 

So, if you haven’t already done so, sign up now for either the Construction Documents or the Construction Contract Administration series of classes, both of which start in January. The deadline for the discounted early bird registration fees is this coming Thursday, December 17. This year’s registration fees—having been reduced to acknowledge the limitations of virtual rather than in-person classes—are already a bargain but why not save a few dollars more?

2021 CSI Certification Classes


For the 39th consecutive year, the Construction Specifications Institute–Willamette Valley Chapter (CSI-WVC) is pleased to offer a series of classes on Construction Contract Documents in addition to another set covering Construction Contract Administration. While the principal purpose of the courses is to assist those planning to take one or more of the CSI-sponsored certification examinations, they’re also beneficial to anyone in the AEC industry seeking foundational training in the preparation and use of construction documents. Additionally, the classes can be of significant value to architectural interns and to the firms for whom they work, as well as very helpful to those preparing to take the State Architectural Licensing Exams.  

The evening classes begin in January 2021 and continue weekly through the first part of March.

Due to the continued risks associated the COVID-19 outbreak, the Chapter will conduct the 2021 certification classes virtually rather than in person. The organizers are confident the quality of instruction will be as close to the real classroom experience as possible; regardless, the Willamette Valley Chapter’s board of directors approved a 50% reduction of the standard registration fees in acknowledgement of the limitations of online teaching. 

Both certification courses can help students develop a conceptual understanding of the entire construction process, and concrete skills in: 

  • Construction documentation development and administration
  • Specification writing and enforcement
  • Product research and sourcing
  • Communication with the design and contracting teams

The Construction Documents program provides a comprehensive overview for anyone who writes, interprets, enforces, or manages construction documents. Being able to understand and interpret written construction documents helps architects, contractors, contract administrators, material suppliers, and manufacturers' representatives perform their jobs more effectively. Understanding the roles and relationships of all participants improves communication among all members of the construction team. The Construction Contract Administration course goes further to emphasize the specific knowledge and skills necessary to administer and enforce construction contract documentation. While not necessary, some students may find it helpful to have completed the Construction Documents course before taking the Construction Contract Administration program.

As mentioned above, both classes serve as excellent means to prepare for CSI’s certification exams. Certification as a Construction Documents Technologist (CDT) means you have demonstrated ability to prepare, use, and interpret construction documents. CDT certification is a prerequisite to CSI’s advanced certifications, which include Certified Construction Specifier (CCS), Certified Construction Contract Administrator (CCCA), and Certified Construction Product Representative (CCPR).

CSI offers its certification examinations twice annually, in the spring and the fall. Taking the 2021 Willamette Valley Chapters classes this winter would set you up nicely to register for the spring set of exams.

The classes are especially beneficial for emerging design & construction industry professionals, and to the firms for which they work. They’re also particularly helpful to aspiring architects preparing to take a State Licensing Exam.

By taking either of the classes, fully fledged architects can earn up to 16 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) hours to apply toward maintaining Oregon State Board of Architect Examiners professional licensure; AIA Members can earn up 16 Continuing Education Learning Units (LU) which CSI will report directly to AIA/CES.

Hundreds of local AEC professionals have already benefitted immeasurably by taking one or both CSI certification classes. The Four C’s

The Construction Specifications Institute recently announced the publication of the 3rd edition of its Project Delivery Practice Guide. Its advent prompted me to again consider the reasons why the precepts espoused by CSI offer practical solutions to the problem of ensuring successful construction project outcomes. One such solution is its now classic “Four C’s” mnemonic, which is emblematic of CSI’s principled approach to effective construction communications. 

The Four C’s encourage specification writers to assemble Project Manuals so they are:

  • Clear: Grammar is proper and uses simple sentence construction to avoid ambiguity.
  • Concise: Unnecessary words are avoided, but not at the expense of clarity, correctness, or completeness.
  • Correct: Information is accurate and precise, employing carefully selected words that convey exact meanings.
  • Complete: All important, necessary information is present.

There are other C’s we could add to this list (“Consistent” and “Coordinated” immediately come to mind) but CSI’s choice of its four C’s provides a particularly useful set with broad applications in all forms of construction communications.

The escalating complexity of even relatively modest building projects presents serious challenges to everyone involved in the construction industry. Increasingly, it strains the ability of project teams to capably do their jobs. The four C’s help offset this complexity by cultivating writing skills that emphasize impact, effectiveness, and economy of means. A direct correlation between efficient communications and the mounting complexity of projects is necessary if we hope to keep up with the exponential pace of change we see around us.

Successful construction processes have always relied upon good communications among all participants in the project delivery process. What has changed over the years are the means of communication (now thoroughly dependent upon modes that facilitate sharing and manipulation of information across a variety of electronic platforms), the speed demanded of that communication, and the increase in the number of issues we must consider on every project.

CSI’s authoritative promotion of its now widely-accepted documentation standards—MasterFormat, Uniformat, OmniClass, and GreenFormat among them—has certainly proven invaluable by providing accepted frameworks within which to organize an explosion in construction-related information. That said, CSI’s steadfast upholding of four simple writing principles has also been instrumental in the development of an industry culture that values information management and the education of project teams to improve facility performance.

Unfortunately, studies suggest young people entering the workforce today demonstrate relatively weak literacy skills despite high levels of educational attainment. Technical writing proficiency —the ability to convey written information in a focused, easy-to-understand, audience-based manner free of errors—is increasingly a lost art. The shorthand of social media writing has not helped, nor has a corresponding decline in the application of rule-governed, ordered, and logical grammar.

Those new to the construction industry need to recognize how important the ability to write well can be to their future professional prospects. If so inclined, they will find specification writing and construction information management to be sectors poised for significant growth. Specifiers are and will continue to be the indispensable managers of a project’s DNA—the information essential to its successful realization. The importance of clear, concise, correct, and complete communications has never been more evident than it is today.

2020 CSI Northwest by West Bi-Region Conference


UPDATE: Event organizers have postponed the 2020 CSI Northwest & West Bi-Region Conference due to concerns about the COVID-19 virus and recommendations about social distancing and avoidance of large groups. The event will now take place October 25-27, 2020 at the Sunriver Resort.

Registration is now open for the 2020 Construction Specifications Institute Northwest & West Bi-Region Conference. The event—hosted by the Willamette Valley Chapter—will take place April 15-18 at the magnificent Sunriver Resort in Central Oregon.
